5-Circular Polarization Folded Reflectarray antenna

CIRCULAR POLARIZATION FOLDED REFLECTARRAY ANTENNA

Low-profile antennas are attractive in communications and sensor applications due to desirable features such as low cost, light weight, conformability, and ease of integration. A major challenge in low-profile antenna design is the trade-off between the (reduced) antenna profile and performance. Folded reflectarray antennas use the advantages of array theory and reflector concepts to produce another low profile antenna. Furthermore, the need for circular polarization (CP) antennas has increased especially for radar and satellite communication system where the alignment of transmitting and receiving antennas and their polarization varies often according to time. These applications also required high gain. Therefore, a high directive CP folded reflectarray antenna can be an attractive solution.

As a consequence, this project proposes a new folded reflectarray antenna design for circular polarization (CP) operation at millimeter wave (60GHz). There are two different configurations that will be investigated. In the first ones, the conventional LP folded reflectarray antenna is converted to CP using a polarizer structure. For the second configuration, a novel folded reflectarray antenna structure which can convert left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) into right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) using a left handed CP selective surface (LHCPSS) is studied.
