TEACHING

Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is one of the biggest Electrical Engineering School in Malaysia. Initially, FKE UTM consists of many disciplines for undergraduate programs such as Telecommunication, Mechatronic, Instrumentation, Electronic, Power, Computer Engineering, electronic-medical, and microelectronic. Now, it has been reduced to only three major courses which are Mechatronic, Electronic, and Power. However, other courses are still run for elective.

Basically, students for all discipline will take the same teaching subjects for the first 3 years and then starting to focus to their specific field of study in 4th and 5th years. During their study, students have to attend the lectures and completing all assignments, quizzes, tests, and examinations. Mini projects are also given for certain subjects which are normally done in group. In the first 3 years, students will also have to conducts experiments in many laboratories related to their field of study. Each experiment will be conducted based on the procedures given in the lab sheets. Student will also interviewed by the lab supervisors and marks will be given based on the interview and the performance in the lab session and also the lab reports. In 4th year, students will conduct experiment based on Problem Based Learning. No specific procedure will be given and students have to come out with problem statement, methodology, expected outcomes etc.

For postgraduates, they will be divided into three main categories which are full research, mix-mode, and course work. For full research, student has to conduct a study in a specific area and come out with a thesis in the end of their study. The evaluation is based on the thesis and a viva-voce will be conducted as to defend the thesis by the students. There are few subjects that must be taken by the full research students such as research methodology and Islamic civilization. The period of study for full research master is normally 2 years while for PHD is 3 years. For mix-mode, students will take course where they need to complete several hours in courses and then come out with a dissertation. Mix mode is normally completed within 2 years for Master. Lastly is master by course. For master by course, students have to complete many hours courses and at last, they have to do a mini project and dissertation. The period of study is normally one and half years.
